EDM #141: Something with Bristles

This is a (partial) drawing of a child's rain cape from China, which has been hanging on my wall for many years. It's a lovely object, apparently made of dried palm fiber. The ends are quite bristly. Palm fiber rain capes are used by the indigenous people of southern China. A photo by John Amato of a similar (adult) rain cape can be viewed here, if you're interested: palm rain cape. (The fringe around the adult cape looks a lot softer.)

Pen with watercolor on Arches 140 lb. (Instant coffee for the background)

Fascinating! I have never seen such an object before. How do you draw with instant coffee? Do you just brew it and draw with the liquid?

Ella, actually I mixed a tiny bit of instant coffee (strong mix) and applied it to the background. While it was still wet, I sprinkled some of the instant coffee powder over it. After the background was dry I added ultramarine to it and used used water color on the cape.

Instant coffee?! That's absolutely beautiful and I would never have guessed it was done with coffee. You're so creative.

Bristles indeed! Very nice drawing: you've captured the prickly-ness very well.

How clever! I may try the coffee technique out and can only hope my attempt will be half as nice as your's has turned out. What a fabulous job you have done here and a very interesting subject too. :)

Beautiful Sharon...the painting as well as the cape. On the photo, the adult cape almost looks like a big mask for one of their festivals.
Love what you did with the coffee, I would've never guessed it!I'll keep a close eye on my coffee near you...
Thanks for posting your reading list as well..would like to try "A free life" soon.

What a fascinating drawing. It made me think of the hats the Native Americans wore in the Pacific Northwest. I'm fascinated by the idea of using coffee to tint the paper. Methinks it's time for a cuppa Joe...

Lovely drawing of a really complicated subject, Sharon. Imagine trying to pick up a small child wearing this raincoat!
I hope you will get the urge to return to your watercolours soon too. What a treat your blog is, particularly with the bonus recipes.
