This is a (partial) drawing of a child's rain cape from China, which has been hanging on my wall for many years. It's a lovely object, apparently made of dried palm fiber. The ends are quite bristly. Palm fiber rain capes are used by the indigenous people of southern China. A photo by John Amato of a similar (adult) rain cape can be viewed here, if you're interested: palm rain cape. Fascinating! I have never seen such an object before. How do you draw with instant coffee? Do you just brew it and draw with the liquid?
Ella, actually I mixed a tiny bit of instant coffee (strong mix) and applied it to the background. While it was still wet, I sprinkled some of the instant coffee powder over it. After the background was dry I added ultramarine to it and used used water color on the cape.
Instant coffee?! That's absolutely beautiful and I would never have guessed it was done with coffee. You're so creative.

Beautiful Sharon...the painting as well as the cape. On the photo, the adult cape almost looks like a big mask for one of their festivals.

What a fascinating drawing. It made me think of the hats the Native Americans wore in the Pacific Northwest. I'm fascinated by the idea of using coffee to tint the paper. Methinks it's time for a cuppa Joe...
