Virtual Sketch Date

I first learned about the Virtual Sketch Date blog at Laura's blog and decided to participate this month. A photo is posted on the Virtual Sketch Date blog every month and people can sign up to post their artistic interpretation of the photo, using whatever medium they want. I've attempted to paint the photograph several times this week, simplifying it more and more as the week progressed. These turned out the best, although they have problems. The top is watercolor; the bottom image was done using a Pigma Micron pen with Tombow watercolor markers. The leaf shadows were much easier to do with the watercolor markers than with a paintbrush. I need to practice painting leaves, too. Also, the photo was somewhat ambiguous. I think those were oranges, and not large lemons, in the photo!

Out of the 2 here, I prefer the marker rendering. The virtual sketch date sounds like a challenge. I might give it a try in the future. Wonderful blog Sharon. Two of my favorite subjects, art and food. Very interesting post about champagne-who knew, and I love your watercolors. Delightful.

I like the marker version best too! Nice work!

The purpley-blue is lovely with the orange (color; I think they may be kumquats?!). I'm glad you participated this month; it's my first month too, and I think it's a great idea! I like letting someone else choose the subject, for one, and then seeing the many many ways people interpret/render it. I like that you worked your way through a series!

Laura, How funny. I didn't even consider kumquats>

I think they said they were sunquats. Cross between lemon and kumquat. Nice job on both. I like the second one best.

These are both fabulous, but I love the watercolour one. Great colours and values in both.

I love that you did two. I can't decide if I like one better than the other. The watercolor is almost 'antique', and the marker is so graphic and modern.
OK> I'll have both, please.

The Virtual Sketch Date is such a wonderful idea.

Hi Sharon,
The best part of the VSD is all the great interpretations. You've given us two great ones to look at. Well done!

These are nice...bonus points for doing more than one :D

They are both lovely pieces! I just love seeing how different all of the sketches turn out.

I think the leaves in both of them look really good. I can't choose which one I like more, the watercolour one has such a soft look to it and the marker one has such bold colours I wouldn't be able to pick one over the other. Good job doing 2 this month

I like them both! Beautiful! Interesting site, the virtual sketch date. Good for you--they turned out beautifully!

ps
I just saw on your book list that you're reading "Light--How to see it, How to paint it" isn't that a great book?!

I am so impressed by the people who did more than one version of the sketch date challenge. Both of your paintings are nice, but I like the second one best for its bold colors, illustration style and the way the image breaks the border in several places.

Well, I can't really choose between the two of them. I like the colors in the top one better, but I love the flowing lines of the second one.
Very very nice. I have to try more watercolor work.

Sharon, both sketches are quite nice. It's hard to choose. I have never heard of the virtual sketch date site. Maybe when life slows done here a bit I can give it a try. It sounds challenging and fun. I'm going to go check it out

I like both of them, Sharon.. The Micron seems to be finished and hanging from a full tree.
The watercolor is waiting for it's touch up.
Beautifully done.
